An Englishman abroad writes...

2.3.09

Darllenais y rhifyn diwethaf o Gair Rhydd (papur myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd) a gweld llythyr (tud. 16) fyddai'n gwneud i'r mwnciod sy'n sgwennu rhai at y Weatern Mail edrych yn hanner call. I ddechrau mae'n cwyno am safon y Saesneg, yna'n mynd gêr yn uwch a mynd ymlaen i gwyno am y ffaith bod sylw'n cael ei roi i chwaraeon o Gymru yn y papur, sydd wedi'r cyfan yn ei farn o, yno i wasanaethau myfyrwyr Seisnig y brifysgol. Mae'n gorffen mewn crescendo o lith wrth gwrth-Gymreig a gwrth-Gymraeg cyn boddi yn ei lofaer a'i anwybodaeth ei hun - campwaith.

It's All Propaganda!
Dear gair rhydd,In reference to the article "alovely protest" in issue 889, I feelthe need to bemoan another lackof correct use of the Englishlanguage. It is not the first time American spelling has appeared inthe paper - the spellings of organized/program/defense to name but a few are incorrect and sub-editors are clearly not doing their jobs.
In a time when proper English is being devalued by text/slang variations, the media should be
maintaining appropriate standards and therefore correct British English grammar should be adhered to.

I will also take this opportunity to complain about the prevailing pro-Welsh ideology of the paper. In a university where the majority of students are English and many others hail from all over the British Isles, they should not be subjected to Welsh propaganda. If I wanted suchcoverage, I would buy the South Wales Echo. This predominantly applies to the sports section, whose Six Nations preview was nothing short of a disgrace. It was the most one-sided
analysis I have ever read - doing no justice to any of Wales' opponents - and must have been composed while the authors listened to Sosban Fach on repeat.

In this week's edition, the drama and controversy of the rearranged test-match in Antigua is overlooked for an interview with Shane Williams, not surrounding the upcoming match
against France, but about his personal ambitions and release of his autobiography.
A story that would engage everybody from Great Britain is overlooked to promote Welsh rugby.

One can just about stomach the Welsh-language page on political correctness grounds, but articles promoting the teaching of the Welsh language are not highlighting the debate, but an attempt to tap into Welsh nationalism. Is Gair Rhydd subsidised by Plaid Cymru? Gair Rhydd is the mouthpiece of an educational institution seeking to promote their students in the workplace. Promoting the use of the Welsh language completely defies those aims. Chinese, western-European and increasingly Arabic languages are those that will benefit society - where was the discussion about that?

Nowhere to be seen, as the pro-Welsh ideology rolls on. There is no use for the Welsh
language in modern society and the promotion of its use - such as a deplorable article from the Welsh officer complaining about the lack of Welsh from the Taf bar staff - is simply an attempt to appease those who claim a lack of coverage for Wales from the media.

I wish to see a severe review of the political stance of Gair Rhydd to properly reflect the readership and not to hide behind the principality the University lies in in order to justify the
inclusion of pro-Welsh propaganda.

Darllen yr Echo er mwyn cael propoganda Cymreig?
Cael a chael gallu stumogi erthygl Gymraeg?
Dim lle i'r Gymraeg yn y gymdeithas gyfoes?

Ac mae hyn gan berson 'addysgiedig' i fod. Efallai bod mwyafrif llethol myfyrwyr Prifysgol Caerdydd yn dod o Loegr, ond mae canran sylweddol ohonynt yn dewis aros yma i weithio ac i fyw wedyn, a rhaid dweud o'r rhai dw i wedi bod yn ddigon yn ffodus i ddod i'w nabod, tydy nhw ddim mor chwerw a di-glem a hwn (wel, mae un neu ddau ohonynt yn). Gobeithio ddoith y creadur yma o hyd i swydd neis dros y ffin pan ddaw ei dair blynedd i ben a fydd ddim rhaid iddo weld na chlwyed yr heniaith byth eto.

Tra dan ni'n sôn am Brifysol Caerdydd, dw i wedi dechrau dysgu iddynt rhan amser fel tiwtor Cymraeg i Oedolion ac yn mynychu cwrs ar gyfer cymhwyster newid i fod yn diwtor yn y maes. Bu rhaid llenwi ffurflen ethnigrwydd, a thra roedd modd nodi fy nghedligrwydd fel Cymro, Sais, Gwyddel, neu Albanwr (neu Welsh, English, Irish a Scottish, gan mai ffurflen uniaith Saesneg ydoedd), pan ddaeth i'r golofn ethnigrwydd, 'mond White British, White Scottish, White Irish, neu Irish Traveller gallwn fod.

Dwi'n cofio rhyw golofn gan y twll tin 'na Dan O'Neil, yn cwyno am y "Welsh community"... ym mhrifddinas Cymru.

Dim syndod dwi'n ofni, ac yn anffodus, rywf wedi clywed sawl sylw gwrth-Gymraeg (ond nid gwrth-Gymreig) gan aelodau fy heulu yng Nghymru.

Cwyno am ganolbwyntio ar y tîm Cymreig yn y wasg Gymreig yn chwerthinllyd go iawn! Mae pawb yn gwybod bod pob un o bapurau Llundain yn cefnogi timau Lloegr.
Ie, dim ond un o filoedd o negeseuon cas yw hwn, a dylwn ddim wedi rhoi myw o gyhoeddusrwydd i syniadau'r boi. Hen gyffredinoli pob Sais (gan y gwyddwn nad yw'n wir am bob un), mae'r meddylfryd bod unrhyw beth sydd ddim yn Saesneg/Seisnig yn rhywsut yn wrth Seisnisg/Saesneg. Beth oedd yn siomedig yw bod person ifanc yn dal y daliadau hyn*.

*Gallai fod yn fyfyrwir hyn wrth gwrs, ond dw i'n siwr mai person ifanc tua ugain oed ydy o. I ddweud y gwir, gwglais yr enw, ac mae rhywun o'r un enw'n dilyn cwrdd newyddiaduraeth ym Mhifysgl Caerdydd ar hyn o bryd - edrychaf ymlaen i ddarllen ei golofn yn y Daily mail yn y dyfodol!
